Why do we need to rejuvenate the lips?
Lips play an important role in your overall appearance! They’re a sign of sexual appeal, youth, health, and vitality. As we age, we begin to lose volume in our lips. They appear thinner and develop lines. The effect of gravity eventually takes a toll and makes the corners of the lips droop down. We also see a lengthening of the philtrum space (between the nose and the upper lip). Sometimes, we can get vertical lines above the lips, which are called smoker’s lines. This can be exacerbated by lifestyle factors such as pursing the lips, using drinking straws, and smoking. Treating the lips can restore lost volume, add contour and definition, minimize wrinkles around the mouth, and lift the corners of the mouth.

What is lip filler?
Lip filler is a gel-like injectable made up of hyaluronic acid. We inject dermal fillers into your lips to:
- give you fuller and plumper lips
- correct any asymmetries
- enhance and contour your lip’s shape
- smooth out smokers’ lines
- hydrate the lips
Nowadays, hyaluronic acid filler is the most popular method for lip rejuvenation. We use hyaluronic acid fillers like Juvederm, Restylane, and RHA.
Am I a good candidate for lip injections?
You’re a good candidate for lip fillers if you have the following:
- thin lips
- dry lips
- wrinkly lips
- down-turn lips
- and have wrinkles around the mouth (specifically smoker’s lines)
Do lip injections always look fake?
Lip fillers do not have to look fake. Our number one priority is for our patients to look natural! Unnatural results defeat the purpose. At Dr. Olga Zilberstein Medical Aesthetics, we like to inject smaller amounts of filler broken down into a few sessions to prevent filler migration and “duck lips”.
Is lip filler permanent?
Lip filler is not permanent! Hyaluronic acid filler gradually breaks down on its own.
Can I dissolve my lip filler?
Lip filler can be dissolved using hyaluronidase. Hyaluronidase is an injectable enzyme used to break down filler. We see an immediate improvement, but it continues to dissolve for the next 24-48 hours.
When should you dissolve lip filler?
It’s time to dissolve your lip filler when:
- your filler has migrated above or below your vermilion border (red part of the lip) due to overfilling
- your lips look ducky and unnatural
How long do lip fillers last?
Hyaluronic acid fillers in the lips typically last around six months; supplemental injections are recommended to maintain the volume of your lips. After several lip filler treatments, the duration of the filler tends to last longer compared to the first few treatments.
What is a lip flip?
We can inject neuromodulators for subtle lip enhancement. We can inject Botox, Jeuveau, or Dysport into the lips. When injected into the lips, it relaxes the muscles, improves the appearance of the smoker’s lines, and creates a gentle “lip flip”. How long does a lip flip last?
The results last 2-3 months.
What are PDO threads?
PDO threads are small suture threads made up of polydioxanone. PDO threads stimulate collagen production. We can insert them directly into the smoker’s lines to reduce the appearance of these wrinkles. They can also effectively lift the upper lip and create a “crisp” border. How long do PDO threads last?
PDO threads are absorbable and dissolve within 6-8 months. But the aesthetic effects last for 12-18 months.
What are the side effects of lip injections?
The most common side effects include but are not limited to, temporary injection-site reactions such as redness, pain/tenderness, firmness, swelling, lumps/bumps, bruising, itching, and discoloration. Most side effects are mild or moderate, and their duration is 7 days or less
